The Marquises offer another reading of Polynesia: reliefs, valleys, heritage and meetings take the step on the image of the stay in the lagon. Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa each deserve a time of discovery. The choice of islands should start from your interest in culture, landscapes and excursions, rather than a will to check out all the archipels.

Adding the Marquises to a trip to the Islands of the Company requires to look at the airlines and transfer days. On the site, travel and activities are prepared according to local conditions. The level of comfort and the pace of the trips are to be discussed in advance, especially if the trip brings together participants with different expectations.

What makes each stop meaningful.

Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa invite to a discovery where the earth and heritage take all their place. This step responds to a different desire than a stay on the edge of a lagoon: the landscapes and the understanding of the places become the line of the journey.

Airline connections and excursions have a strong influence on the organization. Instead of adding the Marquises at the end of the course, let us make this desire a starting point to share time and choose the other steps.

Two islands can tell the story of a very different Pacific

The Marquises are not a distant version of a lagoon stay. Reliefs, valleys, bays and traces of heritage give a terrestrial and cultural experience. The journey makes sense if you spend time on places and stories, instead of addressing them as a fast extension between two beaches or a series of views to photograph.

Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa offer two additional entries. The first speaks of great prospects on bays and valleys; the second connects landscape, culture and art history. Other islands belong to the archipelago, but their addition requires a specific study. A first trip is already rich without seeking to connect all of them, with useful nights in each place selected.

Nuku Hiva, from bays to inhabited valleys

A sequence can take its signs around Taiohae, and then dedicate days to selected sectors. Hatiheu and the interior landscapes can guide the discovery according to the conditions and organization. Travel is not a simple transfer: reliefs and stops help to read the territory, understand its distances and discover how its landscapes are inhabited.

A accompanied discovery gives depth to cultural sites and adapts the trips to your interests. The level of walking must be specified: a panoramic stop and access to a walking valley are two different projects. We also keep a place for the lives of the villages and for free moments, without looking for a permanent activity or a meeting on stage.

Hiva Oa, between landscapes and cultural heritage

A step can be organized around Atuna, then open to selected landscapes and heritage sites. The art history serves as a wire without summarizing Hiva Oa to famous names. Marquis culture and the reading of the places deserve the first plan in preparation; visits and access will need to be checked during the construction of the truly planned stay.

The interest in associating Hiva Oa with Nuku Hiva presupposes enough nights for each to maintain its presence. Land connections and transport requires careful construction. A day between two flights only gives an insight: sometimes it is better to deepen an island than to turn the Marquises into correspondences, keeping time to discover a sector according to your pace.

Walking and access

Not all roads, roads and sites have the same access. Your ease and your desire for outer discovery will be specified before choosing the days, with modalities suited to the field.

Your relationship with culture

The places are not decorative. A suitable accompaniment and respect for heritage give sense to the discovery without promising a meeting or a cultural practice set on stage.

The comfort you seek

Nights, meals, transfers and daily rhythm should be clearly explained. The stay is built on the basis of available possibilities, not an insulation image supposedly suitable for all travelers.

A marquisine sequence requires several useful days, more for two islands. She has to find her place in a long international journey. We look at the nights, connections and margins before holding the definitive association; these trails do not constitute a circuit, availability or confirmed services for your departure.

Extend without spreading too thin

A island of Society brings a transition or a lagoon breath after the Earth's discoveries. An atoll can be studied on a longer trip, but without absorbing the necessary days for the Marquises. The searched contrast guides the combination; collecting archipels should never replace the time in the islands that attract you.

The Marquis moves the Polynesian imaginary. Reliefs arise from the ocean, the bays open on deep valleys and the roads reveal habitated landscapes. We come not only for a beach, but to discover a relationship with the territory, places of memory and cultural expressions that give a different dimension to stay and meetings.

The experience requires not to count the islands as equivalent stages. An arrival, a transfer and a discovery already take time. A few more nights allow you to find a bay under another light or understand the context of a site. The journey gains a presence that does not replace a photograph taken at the passage.

Nuku Hiva, between bays and valleys

Nuku Hiva can be the center of a first Marquis stay. Taiohae gives an entrance to the island’s life; the discoveries extend to the valleys and points of view according to the accesses selected. The route is prepared with the distances and the relief, and does not reduce to the apparent proximity of two bays on a map.

Several nights in a base allow the rhythm to vary: an accompanied discovery, a suitable walk, and then a free time. Cultural visits deserve context and respect for usages. The project does not promise no default-organized meeting or access to each cited place; the proposals must be specified for your dates.

Hiva Oa, heritage and landscapes

Hiva Oa inspires a sensitive approach to reliefs, archaeological sites and art traces associated with the island. Tiki and valleys give a special depth to the discovery. You can dedicate your stay to this island instead of making it a too short parentesis between several flights, and leave the time to the different atmospheres to reveal.

A combination with Nuku Hiva can be studied when the duration allows it, but possible connections must guide the order of steps. Success lies in balance: varied days, rest and discoveries that don’t break. This choice offers a very different Polynesian face than a stay on the edge of a lagoon.

Understanding a site requires more than knowing its name. Express your interest in history, traditions or craftsmanship so that the discoveries match the desired meaning of the journey.

Getting around on land

Relief and roads influence the day. Check the vehicle, stairs and scheduled travel times, especially if you want to limit tired sequences.

The next stage of the journey

A step in the Islands of Society can bring a contrast. It should not take away the time that gives its value to this distant discovery of pressed routes.

The Marquises are not automatically included in a Polynesian departure presented elsewhere on the site. This page describes an appetite. The organization, connections, guides and accommodations will be confirmed in your proposal, with days that respect your habits and the rhythm of the islands, without artificially multiplying the steps.

What is the pace for this experience?

A trail of 5 to 8 nights in the archipelago helps not reduce the islands to a passage. The distribution depends on the number of steps and flights.

How do you connect it with the rest of the trip?

An extension to the Marquises does not add as a night between two lagons. Look at flights, nights and discovery times as a full sequence. Tahiti, Moorea or any other archipelago depending on the connections and time available.

What precautions should be taken in mind?

Respect local sites and uses. Exits to the sea and hiking are conditional; access and levels must be confirmed.
