See the Northern Lights
Await the light in the night.
Await the light in the night.
The sky is moving, and then the silence. A morning trip succeeds also by what you live between the nights: landscapes, meetings and a real pace of stay.
Where can you enjoy this experience?
North of Norway, Laponia or Iceland: the choice depends on the desired landscapes, the season and the possibilities of travel away from the lights.

Discover ↗Three ways into the experience.
Choose your setting
A fjord, a forest or a snowed plain completely change the atmosphere.
Keep an evening free
Flexibility helps to enjoy a weather window.
Travel by day, too
Villages and landscapes give sense to stay even under a covered sky.
Choose a setting for your nights and a destination for your days
A aurora above a fjord does not have the same atmosphere as a light between the pins or behind an island mountain. Before you compare the possibilities of observation, ask yourself in which universe you want to spend your days. This option helps to separate the destinations when several regions may match your travel period.
The natural light imposes a different pace. You can enjoy dinner early, going out, and then keep the next morning to recover. You can also prefer a short evening near the accommodation. There is no one good way to wait for the sky: the project has to host sleep habits, photographic desires and night travel tolerance.
Norwegian fjords as your guiding thread
In northern Norway, a base around Tromsø allows to combine urban discovery and sea and mountain landscapes. Days can change culture and excursions when the conditions allow it. The evening dedicated to the sky should not mechanically add to a already dense program, especially after a long transfer day.
A distant accommodation from the city offers a different atmosphere, but you have to look at its real environment: outdoor lighting, horizon, access and meals. A room photographed under a green sky is not enough to describe the night. The flexibility of the stay is more than a promise of unchanged panorama.
Lapland’s forests or Iceland’s landscapes
Laponia attracts those who imagine a stay placed in an environment of forests and large spaces. Several nights in the same base can simplify the organization and leave time for rest. The winter activities you want to associate with the stay are discussed according to the region, period and conditions, without considering them automatically available.
Iceland responds to another desire: connecting different landscapes by accepting a changing sea weather. For a first trip, a limited area and prolonged steps can be more comfortable than a big tour. The observation nights then enrich an already interesting discovery, rather than dictating a permanent race across the country.
Photograph or contemplate
The photographer may wish for longer installation time and repeated stops. Whoever wants to look will sometimes need a shelter nearby and a shorter time out.
City or seclusion
The services of a city facilitate the days without exit. A isolated base provides another sense of space, but transfers and restoration become essential criteria.
A shared pace
In a family, not everyone wants to watch until the same hour. Planning different nights can make the stay more pleasant than an identical program imposed on everyone.
First, describe your perfect day without aurora. If this day already attracts you, the destination has good chances of matching you. Then add the possibilities of night observation, access to low-light areas and an organization that is compatible with your nights. Heaven keeps its freedom, and the journey keeps its interest.
The dream deserves thoughtful preparation.
These signs serve to build the stay. The durations are work tracks, not packages marketed.
When to go?
It takes dark nights. The period is chosen according to the destination; clouds and natural activity remain determinant. Midnight sun does not allow night observation.
To whom is this experience addressed?
Curious of the sky, photographers and travelers are ready to wait out or to adjust their nights.
What physical level to expect?
Waiting for the cold can be more difficult than walking. Identify your night travel tolerance and your need for comfort.
What equipment to prepare?
Hot under layers, wind cutting clothes, gloves and isolating shoes. For the photo: tripied and cold-protected batteries, with settings prepared before leaving.
How many days to predict?
A base of 4 to 7 nights is a construction track, not an open-air insurance. Several nights simply give more possibilities than a single stage.
What precautions should we know?
Aurores are never guaranteed. Do not drive tired or stop on a dangerous road to photograph. Exit and routes depend on local conditions.
Turn that inspiration into a well-balanced journey.
Compare travel times and access to dark areas before choosing a hotel. A too full program in the morning can complicate the long nights.
What we will consider together
We prefer a balanced stay with several observation opportunities to a promise of spectacle every night.
What can you combine this experience with?
Norwegian Fjords, stay in Laponia or island route according to seasonal conditions.
