Svalbard

The spirit of the destination

Svalbard

Located north of Norway, the Svalbard is an Arctic archipelago renowned for its glaciers, fjords and its vast wild landscapes. In July, the days are very long and allow you to fully enjoy navigations and excursions. This Ponant cruise allows you to discover this isolated region in good comfort conditions, while observing the Arctic fauna and the characteristic landscapes of the Great North.

Take discovery further

Svalbard: spend a few days immersed in Arctic light

In Svalbard, the journey changes face with light. The snowed reliefs, fjords and Longyearbyen houses make up very different atmospheres depending on the period. Choosing your dates is, therefore, to choose an experience: navigation, winter landscapes or polar night atmosphere do not replace each other.

This area does not travel as a region equipped with a continuous road network. Longyearbyen serves as a support point for encadrated discoveries, while a maritime expedition opens another scale. The project begins with this distinction, then with your desires of walking, observation, photography and comfort when returning from the outputs.

Two directions to shape your journey

What thread will connect your itinerary?

Ideas for discovery to personalise according to your dates, pace and local possibilities.

01

Longyearbyen and days in the great outdoors

A stay based in Longyearbyen allows you to find the same accommodation while variing the discoveries. The museum, the traces of mining history and the life of this small Arctic city give a context to the surrounding landscapes. Guided outputs are then selected according to the season, conditions and the level of effort sought.

This formula is suitable if you like to change a day out and a more quiet sequence. It also allows you to see the light changing on the mountains without making your bag every night. Distance, wind and cold, however, influence the activities: their confirmation remains subject to the decisions of the professionals who frame the discovery.

02

The fjords from the sea

A expedition navigation gives access to a broader reading of the archipelago: glacier fronts, coasts and long fjords perspectives. The boat becomes both the medium of travel, accommodation and observation point. We need to compare the outer spaces, the framework and the time really dedicated to the discovery, beyond the only announced route.

The sea and the ice impose their own possibilities. The planned sites do not constitute a promise of landing, and the animals follow their wild life. We are looking for a consistency between duration, comfort and interest of the route. The goal is to enjoy the Arctic as it is presented, with a team capable of explaining what’s playing around you.

What kind of light are you seeking?

The period determines the duration of the day, the decoration and possible activities. A midnight sun photography does not describe a polar night stay: dates must be discussed before the excursions.

Appropriate guidance

Outside of the populated area, the discoveries are prepared with local professionals. The rules of protection of people, fauna and the environment must be respected; the Svalbard does not visit himself by improvising his way alone.

Wildlife remains free

No program should be selected on the guarantee of a polar bear. The interest of the stay also concerns landscapes, birds and the understanding of the territory, in compliance with the distances and applicable instructions.

Give the journey the right pace

For a terrestrial stay, keeping several days on the site allows you to better absorb a weather change. We avoid placing the only essential activity just before the return flight. A more quiet day can become a nice time of discovery in the city, rather than a day felt lost because everything had been planned too tight.

Extend without spreading too thin

Oslo or Tromsø may constitute a step consistent with the air correspondences selected. If you also want to discover the continental Norway, plan a real extra time. The Norwegian fjords and the Svalbard offer two different Nordic lectures: they each deserve a rhythm, and do not resume to a transfer between two flights.
